Downtown Salem Turned Ghostly

Downtown

About a year ago I had this urge to go take pictures at the  State Capitol,  here in Salem, OR.  I wanted some pictures of the historic Capitol building with hopefully gorgeous blue skies as the backdrop for a project I was working on. So one nice afternoon, I decided to drive by the Capitol steps and check it out. It was a bit early when I got there as the sun was still high on the horizon. I decided to kill some time and take a stroll around town and return later when the lighting was ideal. I parked my car and set off on foot. The walk through downtown was eerie at best as you will see later. It was on a nice sunny Monday afternoon, just happened to be Memorial Day. I had walked up and down a good chunk of the downtown city blocks and everywhere I turned was quiet and felt deserted. I saw I’m guessing not more than twenty earthlings during the entire walk. There was a hand full of what I assumed were patrons’ cars parked in front of some of the local businesses but parking was sparse and I mean no one was in the streets. Spooky! So what happens when you get spooked? I don’t know about you but in my case here, I snapped a photo of this lone couple in the crosswalk. You will see in the picture how the couple appeared to be vanishing into thin air. It’s camera trick — it’s not anything supernatural although it would’ve made a better story. You can see that picture here. Now don’t tell me that’s not odd for a city with a population of at least 150,000+ people to suddenly decide to stay home one afternoon. Did everyone just randomly decide to stay home and catch up with their chores, watch tv, play video games, drink beer, have some quality time with family, or whatever that people do in their free time? There weren’t any big events happening in the area or within 100 miles radius. So where did everyone go? Did they all go camping over the long weekend and loved it so much they all decided to extend their stay? Are all that alien stories true after all? Or, did I just pull a Rip Van Winkle myself the night before and was still dazed under the spell? So out of curiosity, I returned to the scene of the crime the very next morning (Tuesday Morning) and by golly! it was all back to business as usual. So I’m going “hmmm”, but seriously, it’s one of those things in life that we shrug off and go on with life, but in the back of my head, I’m going “what else have I been missing? <grin> Now, click on the smaller picture above and see for yourself.
